What's working? What's not working?
In her amazing book Organizing From the Inside Out, professional organizer Julie Morgenstern offers a really simple way to "take inventory" of a situation and create a plan to make things better.
Typically, her methods are used to help people organize their time and space, but I'd like to suggest that her ways can also help anyone who is taking moral inventory of their life, and looking to be more effective in their recovery. She says there are two questions you need to ask. The first is: "What's working?" In other words, what are you already doing well, or what are some things that are really serving you. This is a really important thing to ask, because the better you feel about yourself, the better you will do for yourself. And the second question is "What's not working?" Note that is not saying "What am I doing wrong, or what am I doing bad, or why am I such a F**k up", its simply observing what isn't working, again from a very neutral and objective point of view, so that you can change your approach and get a better result. I find that asking myself these two questions helps me in virtually every area of my life, without leading me to beat myself up over things I have failed or am currently unable to accomplish. For example, something that is working for me right now is participating in this forum. Something that is not working for me is worrying about what other people think. So what is working, and what is not working for you right now? Mike |
