Question

Mike, Do you have experience working with those who have been dually diagnosed (cooccuring)? If so, what words of encouragement would you share with them?

Janbear,

Dual diagnosis simply means that a person has been diagnosed as having mental health disorders AND alcohol or substance addictions. As that covers a wide range of maladies, I would have to know a lot more about the individual before making any recommendations.

Words of encouragement, however, I am happy to provide!

First, remember that everyone is looking for certainty. Doctors and psychiatrists included. By putting a label on something, it gives people a way to get some kind of handle on whatever it is they are trying to deal with. Even when they haven't got a clue.

The best thing I can tell you is:

1. Never let a diagnosis become a life sentence for despair.

2. Always get another opinion, and learn to value yours more than anybody else's.

3. Remember that nothing has any meaning except the meaning you choose to give it.

Hope that helps, and let me know if there is anything else I can do.
