Attachment Disorder and Addiction?

Mike I have read several of your replies and I can tell you I appreciate your opinion. Recently I was talking with a friend of mine who is a therapist who specializes in addiction and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. One of the things we discussed was Reactive Attachment Disorder and the more we talked about it the more I started to Identify with it. I am not a Hypochondriac But it seemed to answer a lot of questions.

I was born in Ireland and grew up in a orphanage until I was three. Today I have a very difficult time developing relationships with any one friend, lover or family.

I consider myself pretty up to date but i have never heard of this disorder. I would appreciate your opinion on this topic as it might relate to addiction!

Thanks
Michael

CC,

Do you want the red pill or the blue pill? If you take the blue pill, you can continue believing a pleasant little fiction. If you take the red pill, I'll give you some deeper insight into what you're really asking.

In other words, do you just want me to tell you what RAD typically means to therapists?

Or through a series of challenging questions, do you want to explore what it might actually mean to you?

Mike

I am not looking for a easy excuse for my social problem. It's just like an awakening. Maybe this has some bearing on my life and the way I interact (or don't) with other people. I always thought I had bad social skills because I drank so much and was rarely sober enough to be social. My inability to have relationships has hindered my recovery in AA.

Maybe this Reactive Attachment Disorder is a bunch of crap. I am A Plumber. Thats why I ask for your advise.

The Answer is the red pill.

I am intrigued enough to see if there is any validity in this concept of Attachment Disorder.

Probably one of your first question's would be "Do I have a relationship with my parents?" The answer is no I don't, they live in the same town as me and I haven't seen or talked with them for years. I have a lot of anger towards my father for choosing to drink instead of being with me and being mean spirited. He was physically and emotionally abusive to me since I was about five years old, Thats when adopted my sister. I do not hold any animosity towards her. I have anger towards my mother for not stopping him.

I am getting the feeling that I opened a can of worms that wished I had left alone.

Thanks
Michael[/i]

Good choice.

For your courage and determination I'll do everything I can to help you. And yes, you have definitely opened a big can of worms. Not just for yourself, but I suspect for many other people here, as well. Here we go...

Despite the words that you were saying, part of the question I am hearing is:

"Is there something I can Identify with, that can give me insight on my addiction."

Would you say that's an accurate interpretation?
