Food For Thought

Is it possible for someone with a weight problem to eat chocolate cake responsibly?

What does "eating responsibly" mean to you?

Eating responsibly is to me a balanced diet; all things in moderation.....eating chocolate cake responsibly would be to have a small piece (and not ten times in one day); it is my belief that if we deny ourselves all the "so-called" bad foods our cravings/desires become all the greater and then we are a high risk of binging!!

If you are "addicted as such" to chocolate cake and have a weight problem then I guess it's like any addiction; abstinence!!!

Did I hear someone mention chocolate???

Yes, I believe that someone with a weight problem can responsibly eat the foods they desire. That is, as long as they know that they will only consume a specific amount that they originally planned, and also, having a small amount isn't going to lead to an uncontrollable urge to have more.

Dark chocolate is my indulgence... I have a pre-determined portion that I allow myself to have... this amount fits into my calorie intake for the day, and besides the obvious pleasure, it even offers health benefits.... a win/win situation in my book. :)

To me, eating responsibly encompasses many things, such as:
~ educating oneself to know what nutrition the body needs for health & vitality
~ understanding one's own body & being able to distinguish the difference between physical and emotional hunger.
~eat to live... not live to eat.
~eat to nourish the body & know how much to eat to maintain a healthy weight.
~eat well, and enjoy! There should be no guilt when it comes to nourishing our bodies...it should be a pleasurable experience :)

Eating responsibly can be more of a complex issue than drinking in moderation (responsibly). We must eat to live, but we don't need to consume alcohol for our existence.
For some people, they can have a drink or two & be satisfied. For a person with a drinking problem, having those same few drinks will only make them obsess about having more. I am in that category. So my choice has been to quit drinking altogether....this way, I no longer need to think about it...it's no longer on the table for discussion. It's the same for some foods that I love... I know that having a small amount will cause me to want more than I should have, so I abstain.
I choose my battles carefully
