Spiritual Relapse

A spiritual relapse involves isolation, judgment, resentment, ridicule,
envy, and a desire to get even. It doesn't come all at once. It is as
cunning, powerful, and baffling as alcohol. The ego has remarkable powers
of recuperation and is bolstered by self-righteous rationalization.
Sometimes, I just get stupid, boring, and short with people. On the other
hand, three or four times a year I sink into a pit of despair from which I
seem incapable of extricating myself. I get depressed and irritable. But I
don't do anything about all these things until they start to bother me, as
they invariably do. Thanks to my training in AA, I know what to do. Get on
the phone. Speak at meetings. Pray. And eventually I am restored to
sanity. What is that if not a spiritual experience?
