self respect

Seek respect mainly from thyself, for it comes first from within.

Reminds me of a song by Aretha Franklin "r e s p e c t", respect yourself.

Not sure i've ever given it too much focus in a positive aspect, am very aware of the fact that I didn't have respect for myself for a long long time though. I beleive I do now.

Hey flickchic i was unaware of respect my self. To do the things I did and use the amount of dope I did, was surely a sign of disrespect. What I know now is that when we learn to respect ourselves we can respect others. And self-respect for me today keeps me clean, keeps me aware that I am a good person, and that I don't have to try and fit in, and no matter what, I don't have to use.

Snugsnug, I always "thought" I was able to have respect for others, having given it some thought I figure I was wrong about that. Even on a level of "respecting the law", I was blind in my idea of "respect" I feel. My parents were always on about respecting your elders, those that know better. It comes to me now though that unless we are taught what true respect is, and yes learn to respect self first, then how on earth are we able to respect others'? Fear I do not believe is respect, and that is what I had for those "above me".

Quote:
Respect is an attitude of acknowledging the feelings and interests of another party in a relationship, and of treating as consequential for the self the helping or harming of the other. Though most commonly referring to interpersonal relationships, it can be used between animals, groups and institutions including countries. Respect does not necessarily imply deference, but a respectful attitude rules out unconsidered selfish behaviour. The concept of respect predates, and does not rely on, the existence of the concept of rights.
Respect is sometimes loosely used as a synonym for politeness or manners, though these are behaviours, whereas respect is an attitude. Intercultural differences in behaviours, self-perception and outward appearance may result in the unintentional appearance of disrespect.
taken from the Wilkpedia Encyclopedia.

the respect I was taught = politeness and manners, therefore I believed I was always respectful of my elders and those "higher up the food chain". the only consequential that came into it for me, was that fear factor; fear of what would happen to me if I did not 'behave' accordingly.

I always thought respect had to be earned. But it's an attitude toward self and others. Good to know.

Hi Doraine,
yes I can surely relate to thinking it had to be earned; by me anyhows. I also used to have major isses with my ex husband and my eldest two children; he demanded they respect him, I used to say that it was a bit hard for them to when he showed them none. His thinking was of the behavioural misuse of respect, both Katherine and Jacob actually do have much respect for their father in the true sense of the word. They do not however allow him to push them around any more. He is an active alcoholic by the way.
