Smile The Solution

The Solution
Montpelier Vermont ACOA

The solution is to become our own loving parent.

By attending ACOA meetings on a regular basis, we will come to see parental alcoholism as a disease that infected us as children and continues to affect us as adults.

We will accept alcoholism as a three-fold disease — mental, physical and spiritual. We will learn the three C’s: you didn’t Cause it, you can’t Control it, and you can’t Cure it. When we accept the disease concept, we will see our parents and ourselves as co-victims.

We will learn to keep the focus on ourselves in the here and now, and free ourselves from the shame and the blame that are hangovers from the past.

We will not longer be an adult imprisoned by childhood actions. We will take responsibility for our own lives and supply our own parenting.

Through working the Twelve Steps and by applying the Serenity Prayer, we will learn to accept the disease, realize that our lives have become unmanageable, and that we are powerless over the disease and the alcoholic.

As we become willing to admit our harmful behaviors and impaired thinking, we will be able to change our attitudes and turn our reactions into actions.

By working the program and admitting that we are powerless, we come eventually to believe in the spirituality of the program and that there is a solution other than ourselves – the Group, a Higher Power, God as we understand God.

By sharing our experience, relating to others, welcoming newcomers, and serving our group, we build self-esteem. As we learn to love ourselves, we are able to love others in a healthy way.

You won’t do all this alone. Look around you, and you see other men and women who can identify with your feelings. We find it easy to accept and respect you, because we’ve been in similar situations. We will love an support you no matter what.
