Bioeconomic Society (just imagine) very important please read!
Bioeconomic Society (just imagine) very important please read!
Bio-engineering is nothing new....we have been altering food crops for years and sometimes the result backfire! feeding growth horomones to our poultry, fish, beef, and other animals. Cloning is not as shocking as it was before and has almost become as accepted as paying to have your family cat cloned. Bioeconomic society is something I am learning about in my sociology class and yes folks....we are moving towards it slowly but surely....the reality is this: we are manipulating our world and our enviornment, our resources and our animals and eachother all in the name of better production of food and medicine to support the survival of furture generations of our species. The bioeconomic society or revolution began in 1953 when Francis Crick and James Watson identified the double-helix structure of DNA. and we started decoding the human genome in 2001. We now have the power, technology, and science to manipulate genetics to the point of transforming, diffusing, and re-creating new species that have never walked this earth before. Corn that fights herpes and doubles as a contraceptive! Goats milk that contains spider silk to make fishing lines and body armor! Tobacco that has genetic agents and genes in it to fight cancer! We also have used human DNA to produce animals whose autoimmune systems are part human. Human genes have been inserted into their genes, so they can produce medicines for humans. by this we have created another resource to heal people....instead of just finding in in nature...we have manipulated nature to meet our medical needs. and it doesn't stop there. We can now anticipate revolutionary changes in health care from just treatment to prevention of disease, and with cloning and bioengineering perhaps even changes in the human species. The framework for a new society and social structure is being layed, and as science, and social institutions establish new values and norms....we will find ourselves along for the ride whether we like it or not. Whole new inequalities between the have's and have nots will be created. consider this: no type of society ends abruptly, instead the lines become blurred the edges appear fuzzy and a new society begins to overlap on a slow and consistent basis. we may not see it in our lifetime....but neither could anyone imagine a 100 years ago that we would be living in the age of technology today, with all the gadgets that we have come to depend on. my mother never needed a cell phone. But I cannot imagine living without one. Consider this: When bioengineering becomes the norm....when your four year old daughter drowns...you will have the choice to go to the local DNA bank and have her re-created for a price. you can have your little girl back and raise her all over again. Imagine Your 5 year old daughter beggin you to have the family dog that was just run over cloned! or a family dog that can be re-created and live and stay in the family over 5 generations and be willed to your great grandkids!!!!!!!!!!!!! Human embryos have already been cloned and it seems inevitible that some group somewhere will complete and perfect the process for profit. you can alredy purchase cat cloning online? suppose that a couple can't have children? the couple talk about thier dilemma and decide to have her husbands DNA implanted (not his sperm) his DNA! would this mean that the child she is going to give birth to is actually her Husband, not thier son? What about the woman who wants to give birth to her own clone of herself? will she be a parent to herself? What we now call our son's, daughters, fathers and mothers will take on a whole new definition and framework and give new meaning to the term "family". What happens when mass cloning becomes possible? you could clown two of you...each that work at different jobs so you can stay home and enjoy your life. What happens when scientists trace the genetic characteristics that predispose us to violence or to peace? to health or to sickness? to natural talents of art, music, intelligence, or heightened fighting instincts. Imagine having a doctor tell you that they tested the genetic material of your unborn child that is still an embryo and he says that it carries the alcoholic gene...and there is a way to remove that gene....what would your choice be? Will we manipulate genetic characteristics and be able to design future soldiers. future beings that are super intelligent. beings that become master artists? Will we try to build a better society for all by manipulating genetics towards peaceful beings tha love art, music, have peaceful dispositions, a race of people that work towards the betterment of the planet and mankind and love one another?. or will this technology fall into the wrong hands who have good intentions to begin with, but the experiment fails and falls into armies that can't be destroyed becuase they have built in super immune systems and can heal themselves on site. What happens when you cross a wasp with a scorpion and come out with a locust whose sting is deadly....perhaps some of what the Apacolypse talks about is not that far fetched? What if we didn't have to use humans to fight our wars...but rather genetically altered insects instead? What about a world without war? without greed? without terrorism? without violence? The moral implications are endless? but right now the way we are breeding,(when it is left to ourselves and our best judgement) is and has created a world of hatred, bigotry, imbalances of power, inequalities, and suffering! When our choices are left to instinct...do we really have a good track record behind us? These kinds of questions is what I am being exposed to in my sociology class....I knew this technology and bioengineering existed and has progressed...but not to this extent. I was very disturbed by this information and I am 44....but quess the 18,19, and 20 year olds that sit right across from me are excited about it.....they think it's waaayyyy cool? Kind of makes me wonder about the prophecy in the bible that says; "when man aspires to play God"? the end is near. My first gut reaction and my soul spoke to me....that this new bioeconomic/bioengineering will be our undoing. but what about our great, great, great grandchildren...will they consider this new bioengineering in practical terms instead of spiritual terms? will they be born into a world where this is the norm? and they no longer consider the God-consciousness. Will we move towards instant gratification at any cost? or will this planet and the human race even last that long? kind of scary stuff huh? Then again.....maybe not. I kind of like the idea of sending myself off to work while I stay home or having myself cloned at death so another me could live on, never loosing another animal and going through the heartbreak again. just wondered what other people think? This is realy not sci-fi stuff....it is reality and what happens if all the bioengineerists good intentions backfire? can they reverse what they create? can we reverse it now? ohhhhhh sooooo many questions!!!!!!!!!and scary ones too. "lord forgive us for we know not what we do" Could this be God's will???????? they say nothing happens in God's world by mistake. there are no coincidences there are only god-incidences. is it all a divine pre-planned destiney? What do you think?

an interesting article indeed Gail,
personally I am mostly against Bio-economics......there are in "my opinion" way way too many damaging factors invoved and the same for the outcomes and possible outcomes. Quote:

********what happens when you are told your embryo has Down syndrome??????......do you then go ahead and have it changed to a so called norm????.......think of what we would miss out, the characteristics of someone with this syndrome has it's flip side, the top being something you cannot get from anyone else!!!! and certainly not something I would even consider changing!!! My youngest son hs brought something into this world that you just cannot know until you have experienced it, a pure blessing. Quote:
Did God create the drugs and alcohol to sit back and watch us die???? I think not.....what he has done and does do is guide those of us that hit the bottom and "wake up" to learn from our mistakes and be of service to others to help save them from the same paths of destruction. hmmmm bit strong perhaps, tis a controversial subject however and yeah, I am pretty strong in my beliefs. Each to their own......they are after all "my beliefs".

Thanks for your reply Fi....you know what is really scary....when bioeconomics, and bioengineering turn directly towards bioethics and biomedicine. Eventually doctors will use this philosophy to decide who lives and who dies, who is allowed to be born, and who is not, who will get the genetic material like brain stem cells to restore thier disability and who is deemed not worth it. This is already happening to some degree by social inequalities of wealth and status versus medical ethics, but as we continue to over-populate our planet and our resources cannot support the societies they serve....decisions will have to be made, hard choices will face us, and people that are too much trouble, or don't have a fighting chance will be forefited. That in my book IS already playing God.
