DETOX
(A poem for relapse prevention)

Heroin was my master, in bondage I the slave
Devil¹s magic poppy potion, leading me closer to the grave
Dark tunnels, deep despair, pierced by bottoms jagged rocks
A lost soul, must gain control, as I head off to Detox
For months on end only, one set of footprints imprint the sand
Leaping off his shoulders, as my feet touch down on land
Hot flashes, body stuck, to sweaty soaking sheets by night
Consuming Clonidine, to ease the relentless fight
Cold chill blowing, with no apparent way to calm it
Heading to the porcelain throne, with another load of vomit
Bath water steaming hot, time and time again
Soaking in the Epsom salts, to try and soothe the pain
Toss and turn, night after sleepless night
Feel like bolting, but continue the vicious fight
Mind exploding, consumed with guilt and shame
Gazing in the mirror, at the man who was to blame
God promised, it wouldn¹t be more than I could handle
Was beginning to wonder, if he¹d ever re-light my candle
The worst is over now, as four walls provided a safety box
Never experienced anything in life, as painful as Detox
