Inner Being

Inner Being

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 2 Corinthians 4:16

Have you ever felt you have wasted your life or opportunities?

I dedicated the above verse to a sister in Christ not much older than I am. She was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, but amazingly to many, she is doing well enough to come to church for the last three years. Things don't seem too well now

With my recent encounter of uncertain health, I do feel with greater intensity and reality that we are wasting away day by day. Death is inevitable and disease is also a reality for many. Suffering, pain, depression, hopelessness are frequent unpleasant companions in times of illness.

I like her to know that, even though she is wasting away physically, she can be inwardly renewed day by day. I want her to find courage in this and find peace and joy in her suffering. Inwardly, disease cannot touch us. We have a choice in this by turning to God, trusting in His goodness, and seeking His renewal in us daily.

To those of us who are not in any such unpleasant situation, do spend time and effort in our "inward" being apart from our "outward" being. It is the make-up of our inward being that will carry us through in life and to another life. Not our wealth, beauty, fame, talent, friends, vocation, etc

The wasting away of the physical is unavoidable, but not our inner being. We need not face or look at death with misery or fear, but our door to enjoy and rejoice in God's glorious presence.

Indeed, "death where is thy sting?"

Lord, renew my spirit daily. Renew my love and devotion to You. Open my eyes to behold Your gracious provision that in the midst of our wasting away, we are renewed day by day.
