When It Is Time to Change Careers

When It Is Time to Change Careers

by Marilyn Ehle

“The Lord will fulfill His purpose for me; your love, O Lord endures forever…” (Psalm 138:8).

Jon had worked in the financial planning field for ten years. Advancements had occurred regularly, his family’s material needs were more than satisfied, and his future was secure. But through a series of events in the workplace and in their church as well as counsel from friends and family, both Jon and his wife began to sense God was moving them toward another path that was far different from anything they had experienced to that point.

Kristy is a single woman also moving forward in her career with nothing but “good times” ahead. But in her own words, “I realized that my current job doesn’t maximize the gifts and abilities that God has given me…” Like Jon, she is making radical changes which will mean challenge and sacrifice.

Because of their strong belief that the Lord will fulfill His purposes for them, because both have closely examined their gifts and talents, and because both felt the quiet leading of God’s Spirit, Jon and Kristy are confidently moving forward into new career paths. Such decisions are not without risk and should never be taken without much prayer, thought and godly counsel, but with a foundational trust in God’s purposes and abiding love, the decisions can be made with quiet assurance that the One who is calling them will remain with them and give further direction as need arises.

~Lord, You have promised to direct us into paths that will glorify you. Sometimes that means staying in the place where we are, but at other times, we sense your leading into new fields of work. Give us wisdom to hear Your voice and courage to follow Your guidance knowing that you will never leave nor forsake us.
