Weekly Meeting July 29 - Aug 4

I just recently went on vacation. Some of the things I did while on vacation was to continue to come to recovery sites online and share. I also continued to pray everyday and talk with God.

What do you do when you are on vacation as far as your recovery is concerned?

This past April, i went on a vacation. We took our camper and camped out at a lake. What i did to maintain my recovery was continue getting up early and spending those quiet mornings with God.Spent time in prayer. I brought my Bible along and read it, and i brought NA and AA lit. along with me as well to read.

I look at every day as vacation.
I try daily to see God in everything without judgement.
Even the homeless, hobos, everyone I see has God and good in them.

Vacation

This year a vacation is not likely in the cards. After a very rocky year with marriage, financial, legal troubles, I am in recovery along with my wife of almost 20 years. Every day is a vacation as far as we are concerned. We read our literature together, go to meetings together, and in the last couple of days I was able to read to her excerpts from the Big Book about the disease of alcoholism, and how it affects a person. How it pervades every aspect of a life and destroys the personality and the person she fell in love with. I thank God that that man is dying, and a new man emerging-one that she fell in love with, but a new, better, improved model.
God, give my wife a new husband, and let it be me.

Vacations have changed a lot over the years--frankly, looking back, it was a lot of work to go on vacation in an active addiction. The addiction never takes a vacation, and by the time I lied, connived, stashed and obsessed myself through the process of going away from my dysfunctionally comfortable routine, I was exhausted. Clean & sober vacations? Whole different thing, scary in the beginning, enjoyable now. On vacation I try to do at least one thing each day directly related to recovery. Phone calls, away meetings, online communication with recovering friends, sponsor, sponsees, etc. Personal favorite: a shipboard meeting of the Friends of Bill W where everyone (literally) spoke a different language and was dealing with different addictions (well, okay, there was some overlap) on a freezing boat filled with booze. All you could do was drink and gamble and engage in other relapse activities. Man did we get creative in supporting each other! I am sure our fellow travelers thought we were spies or exceptionally seedy international criminals. But guess what? Everyone stayed clean--at least for the voyage.

I recently went on vacation, to visit my Dad. While there, I prayed every morning and night. Called my sponsor everyday. Called my sisters in sobriety everyday. I took a couple of speaker CD's with me and listed to them. I only had one night free, so I hit a meeting that night. The only day I felt out of touch was the day I came back home. I went to a meeting right away. And I was able to get grounded again.

The speaker cd's were a great idea, Wendy. I am just beginning to learn how to do that whole thing and I like it. Let's me take a couple of my real supports with me wherever I go.
